THAT YOU MAY BELIEVE 32. THE KING’S SPEECH (John 13:21-38)

THAT YOU MAY BELIEVE 32. THE KING’S SPEECH (John 13:21-38)

1. THE KING’S MISSION (v21-33)

a) Betrayal (v21)
b) Darkness (v30)
c) Glory! (v31-32)

2. THE KING’S COMMAND (v34-38)

a) What it means: (v34)
  •  A new command, to love like Jesus has loved us
  •  Self-forgetful, sacrificial, divine love:
    • Love that pays the highest
    • Love regardless of the deservingness of the other
    • Love that will do so with fullest intention
  • Shown in Jesus
  • Are we content to: Hold grudges, gossip, be unforgiving, slander, moan, sow discord?
b) Its Importance (v35)
  • Evidence of the new birth – 1 John 4:7
  • Is there any evidence?
  • Our love is how the world sees Jesus.
  • This love should be the most visible thing about us.
c) Its Source (v36-38)
  • Learn from Peter. Come back to the gospel.
  • God is making new people altogether! That bear the fruit of love.
  • Put down your roots. Delight in God and his word!
  • DO YOU DELIGHT IN KNOWING GOD?
  • When we love God above all else, we love to obey his commands.
  • Learn to delight in God and cherish his word, pursue Jesus!
  • When we love God most, we will be able to love others best
