THE LORD’S PRAYER 3. YOUR KINGDOM COME (Matt 6:5-15)

THE LORD’S PRAYER 3. YOUR KINGDOM COME (Matt 6:5-15)

1. WHAT IS THE KINGDOM OF GOD?

Simplest definition: ‘God with us’
Starting at the beginning:
  • ‘God’s people, in God’s place, under God’s blessing.’
  • Heaven (God’s space) & Earth (our space)
  • 2 Kingdoms: God’s Kingdom & Human kingdom
Jesus comes to:
  • Make us God’s people (1 Peter 2:9)
  • Transfer us to God’s place (Colossians 1:13)
  • Give us God’s blessing (Ephesians 1:3)
  • Destroy the grip of the human kingdom (John 12:31)
  • Unite heaven & earth (Ephesians 1:9-10)
  • Be the place of meeting with God (Hebrews 4:14-16)

2. WHY DOES JESUS TEACH US TO ASK FOR IT TO COME?

  • Because it is God’s plan to rescue a people for His own possession (1 Peter 2:9)
  • Because this plan was formed before the foundation of the world (Eph 1:4)
  • Because God’s kingdom is to be sought first (Matt 6:33)
  • Because when God’s kingdom comes, His Name is Hallowed

3. WHAT WILL THIS INVOLVE?

  • Living as Jesus’s people – in His image, under His rule, in relationship with Him.
  • Is He King? Over everything? Am I like Him? How much?
  • Building Jesus’s Kingdom – being His agents, making His disciples, caring for the poor, needy & outcasts, working on His behalf.
  • Am I? Or am I waiting for Jesus to do it without me?
  • Enjoying His blessing – Hallowing His Name, enjoying Him forever
